Submitting Your Sites to Search Engines

Google and most other search engines use several separate mechanisms:
A program that crawls the Web to find sites, also called a crawler or a spider. Once found (crawled), sites are placed in the search engine's index.
Software that ranks sites in the search engine's index to determine their order of delivery when someone uses Google to search for a particular keyword or phrase.
To start with, if your site hasn't been found, you won't be ranked by a search engine at all (to state the obvious). So the first task is getting your site into the systems of Google and other search engines.

Do I Need to Perform SEO for My Website?

It may seem like a no-brainer, but actually, the answer is not necessarily Yes. If any ofthe following examples apply to you, you may not be in need of an SEO campaignright now:

• You have a website that you really don’t want strangers to find, such as a trainingtool for your employees or a classroom tool for your students.
• Your site is already ranking well, you’re satisfied with your sales, and you don’twant to rock the boat.
• You’re in a big hurry—say, you’ll go out of business without a major upswingin revenue in the next couple of months. This is not to say that SEO can’t helpyou, but good SEO takes time. You may need to focus your energies elsewhereright now.
• Your site is going to be completely rebuilt or redesigned in the next couple ofmonths. If that’s the case, read Shari Thurow’s book Search Engine Visibility(New Riders, 2002) about how to build a search-friendly site from the groundup. If this is you, you’ll want to keep our book on hand, though, for use as soonas your new site is launched. If this list doesn’t apply to you, we think you’reready to begin your SEO adventure!

It is a rare site indeed that couldn’t use a little improvement in the SEO department.
And, with the importance of SEO on the rise, if you don’t need it today, it’s a good
bet you’ll need to brush up your SEO smarts for tomorrow. So even if you don’t think
you need SEO right now, we recommend that you take the time to work through the
questions in this chapter and make sure that your goals aren’t begging for a little help.

AdSense Content or AdSense Search?

AdSense Content or AdSense Search?

These are different programs and work in different ways. AdSense Content places ads on your web pages, and you make money when a site visitor clicks on the ad.
With AdSense Search, you put a Google search box, on your site. The AdSense search box displays Google search results when a user enters a query. These search results show relevant ads. You receive a portion of the revenue generated when a visitor uses your search box and then clicks on an ad from the search results returned by Google.

Is AdSense Content or AdSense Search right for your site? It's hard to say, and there's very little reason not to try both to see which works best.
From a general viewpoint, AdSense Content works best on destination sites. If visitors to your site tend to linger a while, and regard your site as conferring some authority on the ads you present, then AdSense Content will probably work well.
On the other hand, if your site is a way station leading toward further information (usually on other sites), then it is probable that visitors will frequently use AdSense search if it is available on your site, and this program may make you quite a bit of money.

The SEO Analysis: What it is and Why You Need it

One of the very first things we do when we start working with a client on a search engine optimization project is perform a head to toe site analysis. In fact, more often than not, we won’t actually even quote a price for SEO unless we’ve already done an analysis.
The reasons for that are three-fold. First, every single website is different. Second, we have no idea what we're dealing with just by glancing at a site. Lastly, and most importantly, we spend a large amount of time performing the analysis because it's such an important part of putting together a plan for a site's SEO project.
While this might appear at first to be not a particularly earth-shattering revelation, it surprises me how many so-called SEOs don't actually do an initial site analysis. Another thing that gets me shaking my head is the standard single page of statistics that many SEO firms consider to be an analysis. In this article, I'm going to share with you a couple of secrets to finding out what may really be going on with your website that we always look at during the course of an SEO analysis. But first, I want to show you a few so-called SEO analyses that quite frankly have me hopping mad.
I am a firm believer in looking at the entire SEO picture. There is no magic formula to optimizing a website for search engines; no secret formula to that winning combination. There are, however, a few foundational aspects of good, basic SEO. One of those is the analysis.
Now I don't want to sound like a suspicious, cynical individual who can find nothing better to do than to "spy" on my competition. I do, however, try to find out what other SEO firms are doing for my own benefit. So when a company offers a free analysis, I ask for one. I have several other websites that honestly have nothing to do with SEO. I have my own personal website with a blog, pictures of my kids, and my writing portfolio. I frankly don't have time to optimize it well. But I'm not really looking to gain a bunch of visitors to my site from the search engines; it's just my own outlet for personal stuff. So usually I ask for an analysis on this site. I also dabble in some web design, and occasionally, I'll want an analysis on that site, too. I usually reserve asking for the analysis on the last one for when I run across a particularly obtuse company who may not notice the many blurbs or links I have to my SEO site.
In my own research and desire to streamline my own analysis efforts, I have compared my information over the span of a few months. These are just a few of my findings.

What is AdSense ?

AdSense is an ad serving program run by Google. Website owners can enroll in
this program to enable text, image and, more recently, video advertisements
on their sites. These ads are administered by Google and generate revenue on either a per-click or per-thousand-impressions basis. Google is also currently beta-testing
a cost-per-action based service.
Google utilizes its search technology to serve ads based on website content, the user's geographical location, and other factors. Those wanting to advertise with
Google's targeted ad system may sign up through AdWords. AdSense has become a popular method of placing advertising on a website because the ads are less intrusive than most banners, and the content of the ads is often relevant to the website.
It currently uses JavaScript code to incorporate the advertisements into
a participating site. If it is included on a site which has not yet been crawled by the Mediabot, it will temporarily display advertisements for charitable causes known as public service announcements (PSAs).
(Note that the Mediabot is a separate crawler from the Googlebot that maintains Google's search index.)
